• [3] McClellan and Union (Bonnie Dundee) [1864] After being fired as General of the Union Army for doing nothing, he came back as a pacifist candidate to negotiate an end to the war he couldn't fight. That Bonnie Dundee is a traditional military regimental song and used also as the confederate's Bonnie Blue Flag adds to the irony.

  • The General calmly viewed the field a-smoking his cigar.

The Civil War was the first with photographs. There were regimental bands that performed, not the drum and bugles of battle, but for parade ground ceremonies. When encamped in the field, they provided evening entertainment for the troops.
