Holy Fishwrap!!

For the last 60 years, there was only one tangible difference between television news and newspaper coverage. The latter could be recycled in many useful and innovative ways for the benefit of the environment. Now the network of Angels (as in Touched by) and fishes (as in Flipper), PAX, will get a wrapper of yesterdays' news.

Once KNBC has finished the early and late newscasts, they will replay on KPXN TV30 at 7pm and 11:30pm. Then NBC Nightly News with Naughty Tom Brokaw will follow at 7:30pm. These news cast-offs will carry replacement advertisements giving NBC another chance at making money on their 32% ownership deal with Bud Paxson.

PAXs KPXN and NBCs KNBC originate from this common control room

Both the Los Angeles Times newspaper and KNBC offer an internet version of news. Feel free to print out fishwrap on demand.

"You Are the Weakest Link"

The hijack airline crashes in New York City claimed yet another toll. The NBC network, which had been in continuous coverage since the event began on September 11 (see picture), failed and went dark about 10 minutes into friday's edition of "Evening News with Tom Brokow". The network alternate production facility in Burbank (KNBC) could not be used either as it feeds through the New York studios. After about 10 minutes, the satellite uplink replaced the primary feed with a trouble slide and music, and 20 minutes after that substituted programs generated by NBC sister operation MSNBC which originates in New Jersey. The problem was caused by power outages in New York City near the studio location.

When the World Trade Center was bombed years ago, only WCBS was able to keep a television signal on the air, as it still had a reserve transmitter in the Empire State Building. In the early days of TV, all the networks used the Empire State Building as that was the tallest NYC structure. With the recent event, again only CBS was able to broadcast for the same reason. Stations that failed to learn from history were doomed to repeat it. Or as they say at WNBC, "We are the weakest link, goodbye!"

Speaking of disasters, remember the XFL. NBC was a proud owner of the XFL since that way they would get exclusive coverage rights. This year NBC will have real football instead courtesy of the AFL.

Ever want an NBC t-shirt, special program videos/CDs, executive toys with the famous Peacock logo?? Sorry but the mighty NBC Superstore has done gone broke!! But seriously, with the network downsizing, there will be a lot of authentic used NBC executive toys coming up on eBay. PAX opened its own network store figuring it will take more than a miracle to keep running, but they stopped taking traffic in October 2003.

NBC is now owned by General Electric, one time competitor with RCA, the originator of the network. When first licensed, channel 4 was known as KRCA.
