KIEM newscasts are produced each evening from this control room. Technical staff includes operators for audio mixer, TD (vision mixer), CG (graphics overlays) and director. Videotape playback requires a loading operator in Master Control. A camera operator and floor director work in the studio. During the day it doubles as a production center for making new commercials. Rhett Bice is shown preparing to edit a videotape. |

The news department has brand new Suzuki stationwagons. One is white the other silver. 7 day a week news coverage puts a lot of mileage on the vehicles. For longer more rugged trips into Del Norte and southern Humboldt, there is a black Forerunner SUV. |

KIEM can also broadcast LIVE breaking national news thanks to its permanent high quality connection to the NBC television network satellites. Here Tom Brokow reports on the events of September 11, and NBC provided continuous coverage until a power outage closed down network operation on the evening of September 14. During this time, MSNBC provided backup programming. |
