Live microwave truck in operation reporting news from the Crabs baseball game in Arcata. Operating the truck is one of the tasks done by Larry Dean, owner of R-VCR. Being able to broadcast live events is a unique capability of KIEM. |

Bob Mottaz, chief of engineering at KIEM, keeps the paperwork flowing to the FCC and incidentally makes sure that the broadcast gear stays in good running order. All the local commercials, public service and program promotion announcements are played back from computer digital equipment. KIEM is a pioneer in the use of this type equipment for broadcast purposes, and Bob's comments on its operation have been published world wide. He calls it the "bread and butter" machine, considering its importance to the economics of daily television operation. |
